There is a pretty floral element to the Fèlsina 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colonia that reminds me of iris and violet, but the wine also shows a savory side with spicy tobacco and earth. There's plenty of dark fruit at its core. The style here is broad and ample. The wine shows volume on the long-lasting palate, but there is bright acidity to break apart any heaviness. Like some of the other 2021 wines tasted, I suggest giving this bottle a few more years in the cellar. Colonia is 100% Sangiovese aged in barrique for 30 months. Production is 6,600 bottles.

Castelnuovo Berardenga. Lustrous ruby. Gorgeous nose of minerally, chalky notes mingling with fresh mint, raspberry and cherry and crushed fresh garden herbs. Suave, lush yet dry and not heavy at all with fine tannins clinging to the fresh fruit. Elegant with plenty of stuffing at the same time. (WS)
The 2021 Chianti Classico Gran Selezione Colonia is fabulous. As always, it shows a bit more sheen than Rancia, but over the years, it has drawn closer stylistically to the other wines in the range. Dark red-toned fruit, spice, leather, tobacco and orange peel all build, framed by a well-judged kiss of new French oak. Colonia is differentiated from Fontalloro and Rancia, the two other flagships, in that it undergoes malolactic fermentation in barrel. The 2021 is one of the best editions I can remember tasting. Superb.
