The Faiveley family owns 0.86 hectares of Chardonnay on the hill of Corton, divided over four parcels, varying in altitude, exposition and soil type to give a full expression of the Grand Cru. The 2023 is the family’s 150th vintage of this wine – quite a landmark. The wine was a little shy at our tasting, needing a bit of time for the oak to fully integrate. Behind this, however, there are layers of vibrant green fruit, crushed chalk and apple blossom, while there’s also fleshy white peach and a bite of grapefruit pith. It’s packed with stony power, driving on to a long, savoury, spicy, slightly creamy finish.

It sounds contradictory, but this has huge Amalfi-lemon and lime-zest freshness with wildflower aromas but also an incredible mineral power that is so focused. Fantastic midpalate concentration. The extraordinarily stony finish knocks you off your chair in the nicest possible way. Fermented and matured in 50% new oak barriques and 50% once-used barriques. From organically grown grapes. Drink or hold.
The 2023 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is structured very differently from the domaine's grands crus from Puligny. Offering up aromas of orange zest, pear, apricot, white flowers, wet stones and hazelnuts, it's full-bodied, satiny and textural, with a beautifully mordant, chalky finish. Jérôme Flous and his team can't seem to put a foot wrong at Faiveley; and given the high level of vineyard management and skill and precision brought to bear in the winery and the cellar, I think it's fair to say this is one of the finest larger domaine and négociant operations in Burgundy in terms of both quality and consistency. The 2023 vintage has delivered a crop of supple, sensual reds and fleshy but precise whites that will offer broad drinking windows.
