Good medium red. Redcurrant, marzipan and sexy sweet spices on the nose and palate; much showier today than the 2010 version. Rich, pliant and sweet, combining a fine-grained texture and noteworthy inner-mouth lift. Broad, ripely tannic and easy to understand.

The dark and sumptuous 2009 Barolo Monfalletto has its cards stacked neatly. The wine delivers a beautiful bouquet laced with dried fruit, licorice, white truffle and all sorts of delicious Nebbiolo intricacies. It shows a solid grip on the palate, with a compact and streamlined feel. The class and finesse already present bodes well for the future. Anticipated maturity: 2017-2030. In family hands since 1340 (spanning an amazing 19 generations), this is one of the oldest estates in Italy. Today, it is run by Giovanni Cordero di Montezemolo and his two children Elena and Alberto. The family owns 30 hectares, of which 28 are a single vineyard in the Annunziata cru of La Morra’s Monfalletto-Gattera hill. They also have two hectares in Castiglione Falletto (the Villero cru) where one of their top wines, the Barolo Enrico VI, is rooted. Various American importers, including: Omniwines Distributing Co. Cordero di Montezemolo's 2009 Barolo Monfalletto is striking. Firm yet silky tannins frame an expressive core of fruit as this gracious, supple Barolo opens up in the glass. Sweet red cherries, flowers, mint, licorice and spices are all woven together nicely. In 2009, the entry-level Monfalletto impresses for its balance and overall sense of harmony. It remains the most delicate Barolo in the range while clearly overachieving within the context of the year. I don't expect the 2009 to be a super long-term ager, but it sure is gorgeous today. This is a terrific showing from Alberto Cordero di Montezemolo and his team.
