Here is a wine that flaunts its warm vintage characteristics with confidence. The 2011 Brunello di Montalcino is soft, richly layered and enormously plump from the start. It literally bursts out of the glass. The bouquet is redolent of cherry, pressed rose petal, spice and chocolate dustings. The complexity does not reach the high levels of previous vintages, but what the wine does offer is a fundamentally direct and opulent style that can be enjoyed in the near term.

Very distinct boiled sweet note, and a generous dose of VA too. That flavour dominates the palate too, until the tannis dry everything on the finish. Very traditional, very austere. (RH)
En primeur. Was bottled at the end of July, but will not be available before January 2016. Dark ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Opulent yet stylish dark cherry with notes of kitchen spice and black tea leaves. You notice the richness of 2011, but this is not singed, just on the verge of being rich. Long and a little drying and firmly tannic on the finish, but has potential. (WS)
