The Arnaldo Caprai 2020 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni opens to an inky-dark appearance and thick concentration that is underlined by the intensity of the grape but also of the hot vintage. This is a bold, bruising wine with layers of blackcurrant, bitter chocolate and tarry spice. All of these elements are elevated in terms of power and definition. The Caprai winemaking team famously worked on taming the tannins of Sagrantino, and although the grit and personality of the grape is fundamental in this case, the 25 Anni is a modern and international expression.

Balsamic spice mixes with cocoa and mentholated herbs as the dark and brooding 2020 Montefalco Sagrantino 25 Anni slowly awakens in the glass. Youthfully dense and velvety in feel, it sweeps across the palate like molten chocolate, displaying ripe wild berry fruits contrasted by tactile minerals and spice. Its acidity does a fantastic job of maintaining balance, as the 2020 leaves a coating of sweet tannins and primary staining of fruit, finishing long and pleasantly chewy. This is a much more accessible vintage of Caprai's Sagrantino 25 Anni, yet no less complex.
Dark youthful ruby. Classy nose of cherry and blackberry with hints of savoury-sweet oak. Lots of gravelly tannins supporting the polished, concentrated fruit. They first seem massive and then take a step back on the finish. I would wait an additional year before uncorking this wine. (WS)
