Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2025-2032, Jeb Dunnuck, Mar 2025

Pouring a youthful magenta color, the 2021 Capatosta comes from 350 meters above sea level and is made with a blend of 95% Sangiovese and a splash of Alicante Bouschet. (The latter has been quite prevalent in Maremma since it was planted in the 1990s to appeal to the American market by adding color to the wines.) Coming from red-clay alluvial soils, and silex, it was fermented in stainless steel followed by 14 months in French tonneau. The nose is inviting with notes of ripe cherries, fresh herbs, and fresh earth, with a slightly deeper, darker profile emerging. although it’s quite pure in its style. Medium-bodied, it has more depth on the palate and a kiss of sweet oak spice, as well as ripe tannins and even acidity. It has a lovely feel now but also has the ability to improve with another year or more. Drink 2025-2032.

Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2024-2031, Antonio Galloni, Vinous

The 2021 Toscana Rosso Capatosta is redolent of black cherry, leather, graphite, licorice and dried herbs. It offers ample depth, even if the tannins are a bit imposing for the wine’s mid-weight frame. This is a very good wine, but the balance could be more harmonious, especially with regard to tannins that are a bit coarse.
