A darker purple-toned color, the 2023 Langhe Freisa has a great personality in this vintage. Its wild, brambly aromatics are very clear and have a lot of character, with aromas of rosemary, black pepper, brambly black berries, and minty fresh herbs. It’s ripe on the palate, with a chalky texture, a bit more firmness, and a lovely finish. It delivers just the right balance of the wild side that Freisa can offer and is perfectly suited for hard salumi with a light gamey nature. Drink 2025-2030. Each of the Burlotto wines for this report were tasted at the winery in Verduno with Fabio Burlotto at the end of February, 2025.

The 2023 Langhe Freisa is fabulous. Deep black fruit, leather, sage, menthol, licorice and espresso are all beautifully amplified. Readers will find a complex, dynamic Freisa that hits all the right notes. In a range of superb wines, the Burlotto Freisa is the under-the-radar gem. The 2023 spent ten months in neutral 500-liter barrels. I would love to own this.
