The Chianti Classico Riserva Marchese Antinori shows just how privileged hillside sites were in 2014. Delicate and nuanced in the glass, it offers lovely depth to its dark cherry, kirsch, mint, rose petal, spice, leather and lavender flavors. Supple and inviting, the 2014 will drink well for at least a handful of years. Sadly, production is down around 30%. The Marchese Antinori Chianti Classico is essentially the second wine of the flagship Tignanello.

The 2014 Chianti Classico Riserva Tenuta Tignanello offers good depth and fruity intensity that immediately emerges from the bouquet. This is a complete and likable wine that will pair with grilled steak or roasted potatoes with garlic. You need those savory and salty flavors to counter the fruity succulence and fresh acidity delivered here.
San Casciano in Val di Pesa. Sangiovese ‘and other varieties’. Lustrous mid ruby. Pretty, fragrant cherry nose, and succulent fruit palate with soft, drying tannins on the finish. Not hugely powerful, and I cannot help but think that this would have been the straight Chianti Classico in a normal vintage. (WS)
