The estate's 2001 Petrucci (Sangiovese) is striking. Like the Guardiavigna, it remains quite youthful. Interestingly, the Petrucci is a little bit more marked by new oak than the Guardiavigna, probably a combination of the more delicate nature of Sangiovese and the use of barrels from a particular cooper the estate no longer works with. Ripe, silky tannins support racy red-toned fruit, spice and floral notes. The faintest signs of tertiary notes have begun to appear, suggesting the 2001 is best enjoyed over the next handful of years.

The all-Sangiovese Petrucci 2001 is impressive in the purity of its wild cherry and red currant fruit, its wafting floral notes, and the overall aromatic finesse, not to speak of the finely-spun, silky tannins, the noble austerity of the flavors, and the elegance and breed of the extraction. Pasquale Forte, in fact, has decided to use Sangiovese entirely on its own in the future, and create a different Bordeaux blend with significant percentages of Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc.
