The 2022 Barbera D'Asti La Crena is a dark red/purple-toned color and offers more dark fruit and more intensity on the nose, leaping from the glass with floral and fruity notes of blueberries, black plum, and candied purple flowers. Full-bodied, it expands on the palate, though here again it has impressive freshness and underlying acidity. The structure is well-balanced with ripe tannins and ripe acidity. Though they worked to pick very early, the wines are ripe without being heavy and don’t have greenness of acidity. Drink 2025-2037.

With full southern exposures, the vines were planted in three installments, with the oldest planted in 1932.” The Vietti 2022 Barbera d'Asti La Crena offers earthy notes, dark fruit, bitter chocolate and spicy notes that are typical of the Asti area. The Alba area tends to be produce more sweet fruit-driven wines, whereas this wine is savory and root-driven. The vines are planted in loose, sandy soils with little water retention. Because the plants suffer more, you get more structural heft and darkness as a result. It works for me.
The 2022 Barbera d'Asti La Crena is a heady, opulent wine. White truffle, chocolate, menthol, licorice, plum, blackberry and incense give the 2022 an exotic quality that is impossible to miss. Soft, succulent tannins wrap it all together. This is beautifully pushed to the maximum.
