Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2017-2028, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Jun 2014

The 2010 Barolo sees fruit sourced from La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga d’Alba and shows great fruit intensity with ripe tones of dark fruit (it is aged in neutral oak). Even the wine’s appearance is slightly darker and more concentrated that neighboring wines. The Serralunga d’Alba quality of ripe fruit and power really comes through, especially in the more nuanced and elegant 2010 vintage. The bouquet opens to reveal more spice and tobacco with time. The wine’s fullness and generosity work very nicely in this expression. Drink: 2017-2028. Various American importers, including: Michael Skurnik Wines, Syosset, NY; tel. Punteggio 92/100 · Da bere 2015-2025, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2014

The 2010 Barolo wraps around the palate with plums, mocha, smoke, menthol, spices and new leather. This is an unusually dark, muscular style for a straight Barolo. The shoulders are broad, but at the same time, there is more than enough richness to balance the tannins. The 2010 should drink well pretty much upon release, as it is packed with fruit, supple in personality and full of near-term appeal. Altare sources fruit from La Morra, Castiglione Falletto and Serralunga for his Barolo.

(Altare bottled these 2010 Barolos at the end of July): Good bright medium red. Precise if youthfully subdued aromas of cherry, redcurrant, red licorice, minerals and menthol. Dense, saline and concentrated but youthfully closed, showing a distinct menthol austerity today along with the superb energy of the vintage. Finishes subtle and very long, with serious but sweet tannins. An excellent basic Barolo bottling, and not a wine to drink early.
