From the Capanna vineyard, at 350–450 m, facing the Tyrrhenian coast and exposed to a cooling breeze. The soil is the traditional ‘galestro’ formed of layers of sandstone and clay, which is rich in limestone. The grapes are hand-picked and whole bunches are pressed. Fermented in stainless steel for 22 days and matured in French oak barrels for 36 months before bottling. The wine spends a further 24 months in bottle before release. Very rich and smooth on the nose. Then a bit dusty with the same prunes and chestnut notes as the 2016 Brunello from this address. Pretty dry finish but there is more fruit on the mid palate so it's more approachable now than the regular Brunello. Quite luxurious. (JR)

Millecento is a single vineyard site that wraps around, with southeast and southwest exposition, from which the best fruit is hand selected. Aged for three years in French oak with an additional two years in bottle, the 2015 Millecento Brunello Riserva has more contemplative aromatics of oregano, dried black plum, cedar, and scorched earth. True to the vintage, this is a powerful wine, ripe with blackcurrant fruit, licorice, and dried herbs coating the palate, and supple tannin structure. Allow for 2-5 years in cellar and enjoy 2024-2036. Tuscan born Cecilia Leoneschi began working with the estate in 2003. Today she manages 42 hectares, with the main vineyards having southwest exposure. The fermentations occur in stainless steel, and the wines are aged in cask (70%) and barriques (30%). She has begun to utilize and experiment with a small proportion of whole bunches in the fermentation to add complexity to the wines.
The Castiglion del Bosco 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Millecento represents a happy return for a wine that we have not seen in a few years. This Riserva draws its fruit from an eight-hectare parcel with schistous galestro soils surrounded by thick forests and wildlife. Some 10,000 bottles were made. There is soft and rich cherry fruit at the core with light shadings of spice, cinnamon, tilled earth and a more sanguine tone of rust or iron ore.
The 2015 Brunello di Montalcino Millecento Riserva of Castiglion del Bosco takes no prisoners, boasting a striking bouquet of crushed medicinal cherry and plum complemented by confectionary spices. It floods the palate with velvety textures and dark ripe fruits, offset by vibrant acids and salty tension. There’s a density and primary feel to the Millecento which, combined with its fine-grained tannin, promises years of development. Baker’s chocolate and hints of cedar linger on the long and structured finish. The 2015 Riserva spent thirty-six months in thirty hectoliter French oak barrels and another six months in porous concrete vats prior to bottling. It’s a large-scaled yet balanced effort.
