Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2013-2017, Neal Martin, Wine Advocate, Aug 2013

The 2010 Savigny-les-Beaune 1er Cru Les Dominode has a vivacious nose with plenty of crisp red currant and fresh strawberry fruit that burst from the glass. The palate is well-balanced with crisp acidity, firm grip and a touch of spice toward the lifted finish. This is a lovely, lilting Savigny that I would rather drink in its youth. Drink now-2017. This was the first time I had been back to Louis Jadot’s expansive winery on the northern outskirts of Beaune since their memorable 150th anniversary tasting back in 2008. As I quipped in the previous issue, Jacques Lardiere was then talking about his imminent retirement that seemed to never come. But on this occasion, there was new winemaker Frederic Barnier there to greet me. He has large shoes to fill but he seems up to the task of steering this important Burgundy name to a new chapter, having worked alongside Jacques for a couple of years. “At the beginning, we were not so confident about the whites,” he explained in reference to his 2011s, “but it has been a nice surprise. The dry spring of 2011 affected the level of ripeness but it has lent freshness, but with low acidity.” We did not have time to taste the entire portfolio of over 80 crus, but instead took a sample of 20 white and reds from both the 2010 and 2011 vintages. The 2010 Savigny-lès-Beaune La Dominode comes across as big, fat and explosive. Black cherries, spices, earthiness, tar and licorice are some of the notes that flesh out in the glass in this rich Savigny. There is an element of power and rusticity, and I can't really say the 2010 is typical of the appellation, but it is a wonderful wine in its own way, not to mention a huge over-achiever in its price range.

Good full medium red. Reticent but very ripe nose hints at black cherry, earth, menthol, chocolate and resiny oak. Fat and nicely concentrated but youthfully closed; in a brooding style. Good ripe fruit here but a bit earthy, and less pristine than the Guettes. A tad drying on the back.

Mid crimson. Scented and herby and lifted. Rather racy and thoroughbred. Really zesty but a bit of a challenge for now. Marked framework. (JR)
