The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru offers powdered chalk, flint and smoke on the nose, a very terroir-driven and, in a way, an uncompromising bouquet that deserves applause (even if it won't have the wide appeal of its peers). The palate is well-balanced with a sharp, citric entry that does a volte-face into a creamy-textured mid-palate. Vanilla and almond traces come through with aeration. There's a nice bitter touch on the finish with a saline, Crustacea-tinged aftertaste. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

Leaner than the Pucelles, the 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru Clos du Cailleret is a medium to full-bodied, taut and fine-boned wine evocative of grapefruit oil, white flowers, fresh pastry and herbs.
The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Clos du Cailleret 1er Cru is more reserved and austere on the nos compared to the Clos de la Pucelle, wet limestone and hints of oyster shell coming through with time. The palate is well balanced with a slightly honeyed entry, fine depth, hints of apricot and Clementine with a lightly spiced and tensile finish. Lovely, although I just prefer the Clos de la Pucelle.
