Punteggio 90/100 · Da bere 2017-2027, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Jun 2016

The 2012 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia is a well textured and constructed wine that offers a less elaborate expression of Nebbiolo. The wine speaks in a clear voice and uses a simple vocabulary. Soft tannins segue to a fruity approach and there are end notes of cherry, cola, tar and licorice. This Barolo is easy and more approachable for medium-term consumption.

Serralunga d’Alba. Just mid ruby with orange tinges. A tight nose with hints of chalk. Burgundian in stature and structure and with a sweet strawberry and sour cherry finish with grainy, mouth-filling tannins. Truly compelling. (WS)

The 2012 Barolo Brea Vigna Ca' Mia shows a much more finessed side of this great Serralunga site rather than the power that is much more typical. Rose petal, lavender, mint, sweet red cherries, licorice and dried herbs are laced together in a feminine, gracious Barolo endowed with striking translucence and pure class. Although not especially typical of its site, and a bit light relative to some recent vintages, the 2012 Ca' Mia is stunningly beautiful just the same.

Serralunga – this is a monopole. 60-year-old vines. 8 ha but the central part with the oldest vines that they use for this wine is 1 ha. The rest is used for Brovia Barolo di base. Lustrous concentrated ruby. Literally bursting with minerals. Chalky, serious, and a little closed on the nose. More minerals come out at this stage. Peppery too. Elegant palate weight and firm but polished tannins. Really elegant finish, but very closed. It looks as first as if there is only a little acidity but it turns up on the finish. Firmly structured but well balanced and in need of age. (WS)
