Another Bouchard monopole: 1.98 ha bought by Antoine Philibert Joseph Bouchard in 1791. Limestone, clay and marl soils – yellow marl that is perfect for Chardonnay, says winemaker Frédéric Weber. While only 10–14% of Beaune vineyards are planted with white varieties, this has been planted with Chardonnay since the 13th century. The site is flat and sunny and therefore harvested early. In 2018 it was a challenge to keep freshness in the wine. Short and cool fermentation in tank and racked with more lees than is typical but no stirring. Only 15% new oak in this vintage. pH 3.38, TA 5.3 g/l (expressed as tartaric). Spicy and mineral but with a touch of butterscotch (tastes better than it might sound). Then pulled back by the crisp citrus. Quite broad and rich and with that butterscotch sweetness. I can imagine that this would be a great hit if you don't like your burgundy too austere, and it still has great balance even with all this ripeness. A hedonistic wine. (JH)

Tasted from bottle, the 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Clos Saint-Landry Blanc is just as charming as it was before bottling, bursting with aromas of apricots, yellow stone fruit, honeysuckle and frangipane. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, with a generous and enveloping core of fruit, ripe but racy acids and a nicely defined, saline finish, it is already very approachable.

The 2018 Beaune 1er Cru Clos Saint-Landry Blanc 1er Cru is a two-hectare monopole on yellow and white marl soils. It has an attractive bouquet with pressed white flower aromas infusing the orange pith and tangerine aromas; a touch of almond emerges with time. The well-balanced palate delivers fine acidity, nice focus and a crisp if slightly short, fumé finish.
