Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2021-2029, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jan 2021

The 2017 Keir is 100% Syrah done in terra cotta, with a fair amount of whole clusters. That approach brings out a more savory, floral side of Syrah as compared to the Syrah Per Sempre, along with a distinctly red-toned fruit profile and elements of feral/earthy intensity that are quite intriguing. There is just a bit of reduction – which is not uncommon for either Syrah or for wines made in amphora – so I would give the 2017 30-60 minutes of air if possible. It’s certainly a beguiling wine with a lot to offer.

A serious, amphora-made syrah with berries and hazelnuts and some chocolate. Spices, too, such as chili pepper. Medium to full body. Creamy and polished tannins. Shows tension and focus. Meat. Wet earth. Very pretty. Drink or hold.

The 2017 Keir spends about six months in the famed terracotta amphorae made with Tuscan clay by the Manetti family, and the result is a very naked but elegant and beautiful expression of Syrah. The wine has a crisp freshness that would cut through any creamy meat dish. With creator credits owed to both the famed consulting enologist Luca D'Attoma and Tua Rita winemaker Marco Lamastra, this is a very nice, expressive and distinctive Syrah.
