Punteggio 92-94/100 · Allen Meadows, Burghound, Apr 2020

Once again, the wood influence is subtle though not imperceptible on the slightly cooler aromas of lavender, violet, rose petal, red and dark cherry and a whiff of plum liqueur. There is excellent volume to the solidly concentrated and intensely mineral-driven flavors that possess evident muscle and power on the firm, serious and complex finale that is also clearly built-to-age. In a word, impressive.

The 2018 Pommard 1er Cru Les Rugiens Cuvée Hubert unfurls in the glass with a complex bouquet that mingles aromas of plums and berries with lifted top notes of orange and peony, as well as savory nuances of grilled meats and rich soil tones. Medium to full-bodied, rich and enveloping, its textural attack segues into a layered core structured around a muscular chassis of ripe, powdery tannin, before concluding with a long finish.

The 2018 Pommard Les Rugiens-Bas 1er Cru, which includes two-thirds whole clusters, has a well-defined and complex bouquet, a cousin of the Pezerolles in some ways. The palate is medium-bodied with fine-grained tannins, displaying a little more matière and slightly creamier in texture than the Les Pezerolles, leading to a precise, persistent, slightly more opulent finish. Very fine indeed.
