Tasted blind at the annual "Burgfest" tasting in Beaune. The 2012 Beaune 1er Cru Grèves from Tollot-Beaut has a lilting, blackberry and raspberry scented bouquet with subtle undergrowth scents percolating through with aeration. Here, the oak is nicely integrated. The palate is medium-bodied, soft and "pillow-y" on the entry, low acidity and quite forward for such a young Beaune premier cru, lacking some backbone on the finish. This falls short of my expectations from barrel whereas other 2012s from this domaine showed more promise. Perhaps it is a question of time?

The 2012 Beaune Grèves offers a little more breadth and resonance than the Clos du Roi. The Grèves is both voluptuous and structured, with notable depth and plenty of power in reserve. The flavors are bright and mineral-inflected, yet the Grèves remains quite backward. Readers need to be patient here, but there is plenty of intrigue.
Bright, ripe cherry fruit, strong tannic structure. Slight bitterness. Pretty light. (RH)
