The 1996 Meursault 1er Cru Les Perrières was served from magnum that was purchased on release - a rare beast if ever there was one. And it is magnificent. It has a Coche-like bouquet that achieves that liminal point between reduction and terroir expression. There is plenty of energy and amazing focus in situ. The palate is intense yet poised, demonstrating enormous weight with a hint of walnut towards the saline finish that delivers the mineralité you want from this auspicious vineyard. Stunning. Tasted at the La Paulée in Beaune.

The spectacular Meursault Perrieres will repay consumers with the patience to cellar it. The wine reveals a complex nose of gravel, sauteed mushrooms, and flowers. This awesomely rich and deep offering has superb concentration, delineation and definition to its thick-textured and medium-to-full-bodied personality. Layers of minerals, white fruits and traces of honeysuckle can be found in this powerful and broad, yet totally elegant Perrieres. Bravo! The rating, with the range of scores in parentheses, indicates the wine was tasted from cask, not bottle. Importer: Kermit Lynch Wine Merchant, Berkeley, CA; tel (510) 524-1524.
Pungent, superripe mineral perfume. A mineral bath on the palate; large-scaled and lush, more solid than liquid. As thick as it is, this is remarkably suave wine. 13.7% alcohol without chaptalization, says Roulot. Really chewy with mineral extract. Great whiplash of a finish. One to buy and cellar.
