The 2019 Barolo Cicala is classic Cicala. Bright acids and insistent tannins drive through a core of vibrant red-toned fruit, orange peel, anise, slate, chalk and white pepper. Brilliant and energetic, with tons of focus the Cicala is striking in 2019. I admire its chiseled, nervy personality. All the elements are so well balanced.

Monforte d’Alba. Mid ruby. Very sweet, seductive fruit on the nose leads into quite a marked tannic palate, despite the apparently featherlight body which belies the alcohol level! Dry char on the end but no heat. This should make great old bones but isn’t ready yet. (JR)
