Punteggio 91/100 · Da bere 2020-2028, Stephen Tanzer, Vinous, Mar 2017

(just one barrel made): Medium red. At once cool and slightly liqueur-like on the nose, offering scents of redcurrant, spices and iron. Broad, silky and surprisingly plush, displaying savory, soil-driven notes of red berries, exotic spices and earth, plus a touch of herbs. Slightly high-toned in a positive way, with its subtle sweetness nicely cut by vinosity. The lingering, savory finish features dusty, tongue-coating tannins. No shortage of flavor or texture here. This has the structure for mid-term aging.

(just a single one-year-old barrel of this juice due to hail): Bright, moderately saturated medium red. Coolish aromas of cherry and spicy vanillin oak. Sweet and pliant on the palate, and richer than the nose suggests. Enticing raspberry and cherry flavors carry through a long, sweetly tannic finish.

The 2014 Beaune 1er Cru Clos des Ursules has a clean and precise bouquet in the making, with subtle rose petal scents infusing the red cherry and strawberry fruit -- a mineral seam just underneath. The palate is supple on the entry, fleshy so that you almost miss the structure that frames this Clos des Ursules. There is good tension here with a twist of citrus lemon on the finish. This is impressive and long term.

Monopole. Light cherry. Scented on the nose but pretty dry on the palate. Chalky texture. Lacks charm at least for now. Long and likely to improve. (JH)
