The 2018 Barbera d'Alba Aves is a wonderfully sensual wine. Succulent dark cherry, spice, leather and plum all build nicely in the glass. In 2018, the Aves is not quite as rich as it has been in some years, but that is not a bad thing. If anything it vies the Aves closer to the other wines. Stylistically it has been a bit of an outlier.

Opening to dark fruit with teriyaki beef and clove, the Comm. G.B. Burlotto 2018 Barbera d'Alba Aves shows depth, intensity and purity. Thanks to those bright, high-toned aromas, this wine is actually closer to Nebbiolo than it is to Barbera. There are bright aromas, some firm tannins and bright acidity. The finish is smooth and fine with crushed aspirin and talc powder. 7,000 bottles were produced.
The 2018 Barbera d'Alba Aves is a bit juicier than the straight Barbera, which works beautifully here. Sweet red cherry, red plum, spice, blood orange and leather are all pushed forward. Medium in body, with striking juiciness, the Aves has so much to offer. Even with its obvious richness, the Aves is super-classic in bearing.
Peppery cherry and dark-fruit nose with a hint of nutmeg. Compact yet rich on the palate with finely grained tannins and succulent acidity. The impressive alcohol goes unnoticed on the finish. (WS)
