Pavelot’s Corton Blanc is a rare wonder. Grown on what is most commonly identified as Pinot Noir territory in the Chaumes section of the Corton hill, Pavelot produces a tiny amount of Chardonnay (around just 25 cases). The 2022 bristles with energy – a wine that combines zesty freshness and rich fruit, weighty yet bright. There’s a core of ripe stone-fruit, a waxy fatness to the creamy texture – an intense and spicy wine that rolls around the mouth, yet is cut by lemon-curd acidity. Impressive – and delicious. A wine that should evolve beautifully over at least the next 15 years.

The 2022 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru comes from the southerly exposed lieu-dit of Les Chaumes and matured in used barrels (just one and a half, to be exact.) This has real presence on the nose: plenty of light honey scents, yellow plum, dried white flowers, and chamomile aromas. The palate is very well-balanced, with Satsuma and lime on the entry. It is not the most complex Corton-Charlemagne, but there is engaging balance and real depth, growing almost playful towards the finish with candied orange peel lingering in the mouth. Give this two or three years in bottle
