Da bere 2030-2055, FINE+RARE, Nov 2023

This east-facing plot is separated from their Corton-Charlemagne site by a three-metre stone wall. It’s in the highest part of the vineyard, at around 250 metres’ altitude, with 60-70cm of iron-rich red clay over limestone bedrock, with the latter bringing particular elegance to the wine. A portion of the wine is aged in sandstone amphora – and it was fascinating tasting from both this and barrel. The amphora offered such energy and purity of fruit, tarter than from barrel, but with a closed nose and more reduction. The barrel, however, showed delicate floral aromatics and bright raspberry on the nose, leading onto a more savoury, darker-berried palate. There’s a grip to the tannins, framing the intense blackberry core, and a mineral line that drives on to a smoke-scented finish. Structured and serious.

Cask sample. Possesses a dark, dusky nose and a velvety texture on the palate. Concentrated dark-cherry fruit with oak tannins providing no shortage of structure at the moment. Needs 3–5 years to come together. But the components are there. (AWH)

The 2022 Le Corton Grand Cru is another highlight of the range, mingling aromas of sweet cherries, berries and plums in a complex bouquet, followed by a medium to full-bodied, deep and layered palate that's dense and structured but beautifully refined, concluding with a long, penetrating finish.

Cask sample. Mid crimson. Invitingly open and fragrant from the get-go: peppery dark-red fruit and rounded, supple texture perfectly matched to the fruit. Long rather than concentrated but intense in its lighter style. Mouth-wateringly fresh and dry. (JH)
