Dusty black cherries, pomegranate, shavings of cedar, blood orange and dried roses form a dazzling bouquet as the 2016 Umbria Rosso Marciliano comes to life in the glass. This is velvety in texture yet lifted in feel, as cooling acids and minerals add an airy freshness to the tart red and tart black currants that cascade across the senses. There’s tremendous depth here that will unfurl with time, tempting the imagination with a balanced inner sweetness contrasted by exotic spices and dark, dark chocolates. A web of fine tannins wraps the palate with youthful poise, as the Marciliano tapers off structured yet with elegance and refinement. This blend of 70% Cabernet Sauvignon to 30% Cabernet Franc is simply stunning, and has many years of positive development in store for the patient collector.

The lovely Falesco Famiglia Cotarella 2016 Marciliano is a blend of 30% Cabernet Franc and 70% Cabernet Sauvignon, with the Cabernet Franc becoming an important key to reading and understanding this balanced and linear vintage. Marciliano shows dark intensity and lots of rich fruit with well-managed tannins. There are mineral nuances of shaved pencil and dusty earth that frame the fruit of the wine, and this can be linked directly to the Cabernet Franc.
Some real intensity and complexity on the nose with dark plums and morello cherries, as well as iodine, tar and licorice. The full-bodied palate frames a finely laced web of tannins that grip onto ripe blackberries, as self-assured acidity shimmies out through the finish. Drink now.
