Dark plum, smoke, leather, sage, licorice and menthol notes flesh out in the 2009 Balifico, Volpaia's Sangioveto and Cabernet Sauvignon blend. The tannins are suave, silky and polished, especially within the context of the vintage. This, too, looks like an early drinker, but all the elements are in the right place. Violet, lavender and cassis notes ring out on the layered finish.

The 2009 Balifico is a 65-35 blend of Sangiovese and Cabernet Sauvignon that boats warm and velvety tones of ripe fruit, leather, pipe tobacco and cured meat. Sweet and generous on the close, this is a soft and fleshy wine that seems oversized and super generous in the mouth. Anticipated maturity: 2015-2023. Castello di Volpaia is one of the banner estates of the Radda in Chianti subzone of Chianti Classico in Siena province.
