The 2017 Santenay Clos des Mouches 1er Cru has plenty of energy, but a bit less meat on the bones than the other Santenay 1ers, which leaves the wine feeling rather rustic. Game and smoky notes add to an impression of wildness. It will be interesting to see if the Clos des Mouches fleshes out during élevage or perhaps with time in bottle.

The 2017 Santenay 1er Cru Clos des Mouches Rouge bursts from the glass with scents of rose petal, minty red berries and warm spices. On the palate, it's medium to full-bodied, broad and satiny, with a beautifully layered mid-palate, lovely purity of fruit and a long, succulent finish. This gets my nod as the finest of Moreau's reds in 2017.
