Elegant and streamlined, the 2013 Val d'Arno di Sopra BògginAnfora is an extraordinary wine. It approaches the ethereal and nuanced aromas you might expect of a Pinot Noir. But this is Sangiovese from the warm and sunny Val d'Arno di Sopra appellation near Arezzo in Tuscany. The quality of fruit is sweet and plump, but the wine is in no way simplistic or banal. The mouthfeel is silky and very long in persistence. Dusty mineral notes appear on the close. BògginAnfora sees extended maceration times (up to six months) in clay amphorae. The first vintage produced was 2011.

The 2013 Bòggina Anfora is strikingly beautiful. Translucent and weightless in the glass, the 2013 possesses haunting aromatics to match its finely-sculpted fruit. Here the flavors are chiseled and bright, with a bit more lift but less intensity than the straight Bòggina. Shades of mint, cinnamon and wild flowers add an expressive upper register throughout. The Bòggina Anfora is coming along nicely, although my sense is that quite a bit of untapped potential remains with this bottling.

Petrolo is one of Tuscany’s cult names. It is best known for Galatrona – a Merlot cuvée that is, along with Masseto, often described as the Pétrus of Tuscany.
