50% Sangiovese, 25% Merlot, 25% Cabernet Sauvignon. Fermented in stainless steel and élevage in cement, while a tiny part of the wine is aged in French barrique and blended in with the wine in the cement tanks later on. Just mid crimson. Fresh cherry nose and almost a little grassy. Easygoing fruit on the palate with some lovely rustic soft tannins. A very good daily quaffer with real length. (WS)

The 2011 Mongrana is an unusually floral, delicate wine from Querciabella's estate vineyards in Maremma, where the wines are usually much more powerful. Dark red cherries, spices, licorice, tobacco and menthol are woven together nicely. This attractive, mid-weight red is best suited for drinking over the next few years. Best of all, it is a terrific value. The Mongrana was aged in cement and neutral oak.

Literally translating as “beautiful oak”, Querciabella was created in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni. A pioneer in Chianti, he started farming biodynamically and experimenting with both varieties and winemaking – one result of which was Camartina, the property’s flagship Super Tuscan.
