Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2019-2024, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2019

Querciabella's 2016 Mongrana, the entry-level wine in this range, is gracious and very pretty, with lovely floral and red berry character. This Sangiovese-based Maremma red blend has so much to offer. I would prefer to drink it young, while the fruit remains vibrant. Best of all the 2016 is a superb value for an estate wine. In 2016, Querciabella did not bottle Turpino, their top Maremma red, but instead blended it in here, where it represents about 10% of the wine.

Love the aromas of plums, cherries and currants with hints of flowers and undertones of dried flowers. Full body, round and silky tannins and fresh and bright finish. A blend of sangiovese, merlot and cabernet sauvignon. Needs two or three years to come together, but already beautiful. From biodynamically grown grapes and vegan.

Querciabella

Literally translating as “beautiful oak”, Querciabella was created in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni. A pioneer in Chianti, he started farming biodynamically and experimenting with both varieties and winemaking – one result of which was Camartina, the property’s flagship Super Tuscan.
