Sweet red cherries, plums, spices, leather and anise take shape in Piancornello's 2009 Brunello di Montalcino. There is good juiciness in the glass, not to mention plenty of near term appeal. Tobacco, cedar and red cherries emerge on the silky finish, but the overall impression is of a very forward wine that needs to be enjoyed within the next few years.

The 2009 Brunello di Montalcino sees fruit sourced from the thicker soils of the Abbazia Sant’Antimo area in the southern part of the appellation. This is a very compelling wine. What I liked most about it is its frankness and its simple lines – it’s a wine that paints in primary colors. Decidedly uncomplicated, it spells out clean aromas of bold cherry, dark spice, smoky mineral and sweet almond. The delivery is impeccable and pristine in the mouth as well where smooth tannins and a bright spot of acidity form this Brunello’s backbone. Drink: 2016-2024. Mid ruby with orange rim. Sweet, nutty nose yet much more youthful on the palate. Mid palate weight and lots of sweet fine cherry fruit. Not shy by any measure but well balanced, even if there is more than a hint of candied fruit. Good tannic structure too. (WS)
