Punteggio 94/100 · James Suckling, Apr 2017

This is a white wine that seems more like a red with aromas of sliced lemons, cooked apples and stones. Full and phenolic with superb tannin texture and great length. Under the radar. Try it now.

(these vines on the low part of the slope were hit hard by hail and produced just one-third of a normal crop): Reduced nose suggests a rich, creamy, lemony wine. Larger-scaled in the mouth than the Beaune Bressandes but currently a bit disjointed, with late-arriving acidity giving shape to the lemony fruit and extending the finish. Also bit warm on the back end, but this should be drinkable fairly early.

The 2014 Beaune 1er Cru Grèves le Clos Blanc was affected by hail this year, but that does not impede upon the nose that in fact has a little more chutzpah than the Beaune Bressandes at the moment. The palate is well balanced, vibrant with a keen line of acidity. There is good depth here, not the most complicated white Beaune you will find, but nicely focused and with a long, tender finish. Very fine.

Smells deeply delicious even before I have put it in my mouth – that lovely contrast between creamy/mealy and bright zesty citrus. Deep and creamy on the palate too with a hint of orange that I associate more often with Meursault. Deep and full but still tight and fresh. Great stuff. (JH)
