Raveneau’s 2001 Chablis Grand Cru Blanchot is marked by a bit of botrytis influence this year, which lends this normally rather generous site a decidedly gourmand quality. The wine bursts from the glass with an exotic bouquet of preserved lemon, honey, tangerine oil and peach, the prelude to a textural, full-bodied and concentrated palate impression that retains unerring precision despite its somewhat atypically precocious format. This is at its peak, and now is a very good time to start pulling corks.

In contrast to the Vaillons and Montée de Tonnerre, this is more aromatically direct and perhaps somewhat less nuanced with extraordinarily pure aromas of gunflint and green fruit plus big, edgy, taut flavors that seem to be directly extracted from liquid stone. The almost painfully intense flavors broaden out on the finish and there is a slightly sweet quality to it that is completely buffered by the fine acidity.

Dense, spicy and strong, with lovely sweetness of fruit (the wine still carries about 2.5 grams per liter of residual sugar) and a rather extroverted personality. "A bit less austere than usual for this wine," notes Raveneau.
