Tasted blind at the Burgundy 2011 horizontal tasting in Beaune. Deep in color, the Corton Grèves Grand Cru ’11 from David Croix has a compact, slightly pinched bouquet that is nicely defined, though it does not really flow as it should. The palate is balanced but simple: light tannins and crisp acidity, but missing weight and persistence on the no-frills finish. I suspect, given the pedigree of David’s other ‘11s, that this may be amid an awkward phase and I will seek to retaste it.

The 2011 Corton-Greves recalls the Pertuisots in its firm, classic sense of structure. Today, the Greves is a bit austere, but not unpleasantly so. Sweet tobacco, mint, licorice and dark red stone fruits all meld together nicely, followed by expressive floral notes, all underpinned by classic Greves tannins. The 2011 is deceptively medium in body. Ideally, it needs at least a few years to fully come together.
