Black cherries, smoke, licorice, spices and melted road tar are some of the notes that burst from the glass in the 2011 Barbera d'Alba Tulin. Explosive, dark and brooding in the glass, the Tulin packs serious punch. Lavender, orange peel, cloves and menthol add an exotic flair on the huge, voluptuous finish. I can't wait to see how this ages.

(bottled three weeks prior to my visit; aged in 50% new barriques for a year and a half; Pelissero told me this was his first wine with 15% alcohol): Bright ruby-purple. Port-like ripeness to the high-toned aromas of blackberry, black cherry, licorice and chocolate. Huge, lush and sweet but a bit ponderous. A major mouthful of chocolatey dark fruits. Finishes with substantial, slightly dry, oak-powered tannins. Pelissero says this is one of his most-requested wines but it's not my style.
Pelissero's 2011 Barbera d'Alba Tulin is striking in its beauty. Tasted next to the 2009, the 2011 boasts even better balance, with expressive aromatics, gorgeous fruit and lively minerality. The 2011 is long, pure and vibrant in the glass, with tons of energy and pure class.
