Bright ruby-red. Plum, licorice and dusty oak on the nose, along with some slightly green tobacco leaf and sage tones. Then round, ripe and fairly soft in the mouth, made in an oaky and rather international style. Ultimately lacks definition and comes across as a bit innocuous. The oak turns slightly bitter on the finish.

Inviting, generous aromas of ripe red fruits, wildflowers and vanilla. Keenly balanced with ripe red and black fruit, firm acidity and mature tannins, with oak a very subtle background note. Modern? Yes. Over the top? Absolutely not. (LM)
Banfi's 2003 Brunello di Montalcino is a big, full-bodied, intense wine loaded with dark jammy fruit, spices and licorice. Most of the wine's charm is in its up-front personality as the finish is short and the tannins are astringent, most likely a combination of the quality of the fruit in this vintage and an exuberant use of French oak. While an excellent wine in absolute terms, there is very little that speaks to Brunello di Montalcino here.
