Although still quite oaky and tannic, the 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucere has held up reasonably well in that it will drink for another few years. Worn-in leather, smoke, licorice and dried stone fruit give the 2005 its tertiary personality. The tannins will soon overwhelm the wine's balance, so the 2005 is best enjoyed sooner rather than later.

The 2005 Brunello di Montalcino Le Lucère is darker, rich and a rounder than the regular bottling. Dark cherries, menthol, licorice and new leather are some of the notes that emerge as this relatively large-scaled, expansive wine opens up in the glass. Layers of rich, dark fruit frame a building, but impeccably generous finish. This is an outstanding effort in 2005.
