100% Sangiovese. 14-16 months in fine to extra-fine grained French oak (20% new). Mid ruby with a pale rim. True farmyard aromas and then very sweet on the palate. Not as much lift as I expected. Just a bit foot-dragging. (JR)

The 2011 Chianti Classico Riserva Querciabella is a fragrant and fruit-forward expression with bold layers and rich texture. This is a compelling and velvety wine that opens to notes of black cherry, red rose, spicy tobacco and wet earth. It is a determined and robust expression made with organically-farmed fruit in the Greve-in-Chianti sub zone of the appellation.
Mid ruby with the beginning of orange tinges. Minerally and savoury nose with fine, sweet-sour cherry underneath. Still a little austere on the palate and quite locked up on the finish and tightly packed with tannins. Wonderful elegant palate weight and needs an extra year in bottle. (WS)

Literally translating as “beautiful oak”, Querciabella was created in 1974 by Giuseppe Castiglioni. A pioneer in Chianti, he started farming biodynamically and experimenting with both varieties and winemaking – one result of which was Camartina, the property’s flagship Super Tuscan.
