Full bottle 1,471 g. Quite intractable and tough when I opened it, so I left it. Came back two days later, and the wine had softened into a smile. Tannins turned supple. Fruit, at first sulkily withheld, now spilling across the palate – wild raspberries, warm plums, a hint of dates steeped in tea, pomegranate, and the sweet spices and orange notes of mulled wine. Relatively big alcohol and quite throat-warming, so not a refreshing burgundy, but lovely for a warm, comforting meal on a cold day. (TC)

Full bottle a heavy 1,481 g. Transparent garnet. Good lift and attack on the nose, still with marked acidity but nothing wrong with that – though this wine is probably best left in bottle for a year or two. Confident and well made. Redcurrant fruit and then quite a tannic presence. Definitely serve with food! (JR)
The 2018 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Rouge is perfumed and floral on the nose, crushed rose petals infuse the brambly red berry fruit laced with iodine and undergrowth. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, quite saline in the mouth with a harmonious, almost understated finish. Just a slight attenuation but that is because it is soon after bottling.
Rich crimson colour. Slightly muddy nose and a bit severe on the palate. Quite demanding to taste. (JR)
