Da bere 2024-2034, FINE+RARE, Nov 2022

Poggio di Sotto’s 2018 Brunello di Montalcino is outstanding. The aromatic florality to the wine is beguiling – waves of dried rose, lavender, dried earth, savoury nutty notes and sweet spice waft from the glass. It has such a pure nose. The palate is equally arresting. The tannins are beautifully refined, silky and have such a refreshing quality. The layers of delicate red cherry fruit, savoury spice and mouth-watering freshness is so impressive. This is a beautiful Brunello that has thrived in a delicate vintage.

Poured at a retrospective tasting going back to 1999 held in NYC. Aged 30 months. Impressive effort from a very challenging vintage plagued with rain and rot. Translucent in its garnet hue but darker in flavour, more dark plum than cherry, soft, sweet and fleshy. The alcohol is a warming, with a gentle cinnamon spice; the tannins soft and chewy. (TQT)

Tasting as part of a short vertical at the estate, the 2018 Brunello Di Montalcino sports a bright ruby color and is aromatic with notes of cranberries, orange oils, fresh spice, anise, and crushed stones. The palate is beautifully pure, with raspberry notes, a linear feel, and wonderful elegance as well as fine tannins and a long, graceful finish. This more elegant and Burgundian vintage is showing beautifully today and can be enjoyed over the coming 20 years.

The Poggio di Sotto 2018 Brunello di Montalcino has a core of bright cherry fruit and baking spice that is surrounded by a ferrous note of iron ore or rust that is almost salty in taste. That metallic or saline quality plays out beautifully across abundant dark berry fruit. The wine is quite immediate and up front, but when you compare it to a cooler vintage like 2013, you see just how generous and full the bouquet is at this young age. That's a nice trait to have.
