FINE+RARE, Nov 2022

From a 3.55-hectare plot at around 300 metres’ altitude, this site is east-facing – something that’s increasingly an advantage, Frédéric Weber points out, retaining more acidity in the grapes. The limestone bedrock gives a particularly mineral, saline wine – showing a more focused style of Corton than others. Sadly in 2021, Bouchard managed to make just 6hl/ha from this vineyard after frost decimated the site. Aromas of lime blossom, honey, lemon pith and softly whipped cream entice on the nose, leading on to a linear palate with laser-like acidity. This is tightly packed with citrus fruit and will need time in the cellar to open up.

The 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is very composed with clear delineation on the nose. It is tightly coiled initially, then finds its feet and blossoms with lemon thyme, orange pith and subtle hazelnut scents. The palate is well balanced with a silver bead of acidity. Precise and tensile, I appreciate the energy and sorbet-like freshness of this Grand Cru, leaving a dab of lemongrass on the aftertaste. This feels very assured and, in banal terms, very delicious - far better than its performance from barrel. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

All 8 hectoliters of the 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is maturing in one foudre . This has a light nose of apple blossom, Mirabelle and white peach, hints of camomile, focused if needing a bit more energy. The palate is well balanced with a citric, orange rind entry with pretty apricot notes towards its unassuming finish.
