Punteggio 89/100 · Da bere 2023-2030, Monica Larner, Wine Advocate, Feb 2024

This wine has a very strong oak imprint. The 2019 Maremma Toscana Baffonero also shows a strong medicinal or green character with eucalyptus essence that could come from the Merlot, which often shows a minty character, or from the oak. Fermentation starts off in cement vats, and the wine ages in new barrique for 24 months. It's a lot to take in, and the powerful 15% alcohol content is hard to ignore. Baffonero shows inky thick concentration with residual heaviness, sweet brandy and stewed cherry. It exudes heaviness, concentration and oak tannins. You don't find the proverbial point of light.

Punteggio 95/100 · Da bere 2025-2039, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Jul 2022

The 2019 Baffonero is suave and elegant. Blackberry, mocha, espresso, cinnamon and a touch of new French oak open nicely. In 2019, Baffonero is a bit less opulent than it can be, but it makes up for that with its silkiness and persistence. Best of all, it will be ready to drink with minimal cellaring. In 2019, winemaker Alessandro Cellai reduced time in oak from 24 to 19 months and increased time in cement prior to bottling from two to six months, a choice that worked out very, very well.
