The 2001 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco is an exceptional wine that shows a long capacity for a steady and fluid evolution. During my mini vertical of the 2001, 2004 and 2006 vintages, this wine kept going long after the others started to wind down. The plumpness of the fruit has remained intact despite the age of this wine. The acidity is well integrated and its presence offers a bright sense of vertical lift. We were worried that the cork was a little too dry on this wine and that the bouquet would remain shut down, but this never became an issue. As the wine continues to evolve, it offers cured meat and spice. It shows great intensity and a beautiful evolution.

Although the wine's flavors have begun to develop its structural frame is still quite youthful and another few years of cellaring seem prudent. Unfortunately I was unable to taste more recent vintages of this wine.

Unfortunately I was unable to taste more recent vintages of this wine. Grattamacco must surely be regarded as one of Bolgheri’s historic properties. The estate’s first vintage was 1978, well before the area became the fashionable spot it is today. The wines are made under the direction of consulting oenologist Maurizio Castelli. Unlike many of its neighbors Grattamacco has always included a portion of Sangiovese in its wines with the goal of maintaining some regional typicity. Grattamacco’s story begins when Piermario Meletti Cavallari purchased an abandoned vineyard in 1977 and grafted over many of the vines. He produced one of the earliest Super Tuscans in 1982 – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese and a wine which continues to earn acclaim today.
