FINE+RARE, Oct 2022

There’s only one barrel of this Grand Cru in 2021 – with Alvina Pernot’s precise and elegant style beautifully complementing the classing Corton power. The nose is chalky and subtle with the slightest touch of sweetness from oak. There’s incredible concentration here – with a roaring engine of citrus fruit that drives the palate. The intensity is so impressive, with an iodine freshness and tangy bite. The finish is long, mouth-watering and saline.

The 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru is much more austere on the nose: stony, almost Zen-like in style, which is not what I expect from this Grand Cru. The palate is built around a citric thread of acidity with notes of sour lemon and freshly sliced pear. It builds nicely, broadening out towards the finish but never quite clicks into fifth gear. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

The 2021 Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru offers scents of yellow plum, chalky dust and light flinty scents, though to me it is outshone by the preceding Les Pucelles. The palate is well balanced with a fine bead of acidity, a mixture of orange pith, citrus peel and white peach, though it just needs more complexity on the finish. Fine.

Alvina Pernot

Alvina Pernot is one of the most exciting producers of white Burgundy today. Based in Puligny-Montrachet with some incredible vineyards, this is a name to watch – creating taut and mineral styles of white Burgundy.
