Punteggio 94/100 · Da bere 2025-2035, Antonio Galloni, Vinous, Aug 2023

The 2020 Tenuta di Trinoro is sensual and racy but also not as opulent as it can be. That's not necessarily a bad thing at all. Sweet floral, spice and savory top notes meld into a core of dark-toned fruit. Overall, the 2020 feels like a smaller-scaled, somewhat slender Tenuta that is likely to drink well on the early side, given that aromatics are developing. Pretty floral and spice notes lift the finish nicely. This is a classy Tenuta but not quite the powerhouse of most years. This is the first time Tenuta di Trinoro is being released with an extra year in bottle. I suspect it may be going through a closed phase given how the rest of the 2020s showed last year. We will see.

Exceptionally high Cabernet Franc: 92% (8% Merlot). Very good vintage but released after Andrea Franchetti’s demise by those who survived him. Harvest: Merlot 30 September to 2 October; Cabernet Franc 8–10 October. 6,000 bottles produced. Velvety purple. Lots of tannin and a much more structured wine than earlier vintages. A slower developer. Tea-leaf flavour. Kept back for a year before releasing it. (JR)

The flagship wine from Tenuta di Trinoro is this gorgeous blend of 92% Cabernet Franc and 8% Merlot. The 2020 Tenuta di Trinoro follows on the heels of the 2019 vintage that earned a perfect 100-point score. The 2020 vintage is more open-knit for sure, but it offers a very special view onto Cabernet Franc in particular. The plush black cherry softness of the Merlot is aligned magically with the dark intensity and tannic power of the Cabernet Franc. The fruit ripeness is impeccable and there are no green tones, nor are there any overripe nuances. Everything comes together with balance. For the first time, this wine is being released with an extra year of bottle age. 6,000 bottles were made.

92% Cabernet Franc, 8% Merlot. The late Andrea Franchetti's son Benjamin describes how the blend was assembled: ' I especially have such a strong memory of when we did the 2020 blend. It was a cold, yet extremely sunny day with snow covering the vines. We were all together cramped in a room: my father, Lorenzo, Calogero and I together with my wife Verde and our newborn Alma, and my mum Fiora also happened to be there. It was very joyful. In a way it felt like the start of a new cycle, although I could not know it would be my father's last blend.' Fine, luscious mid crimson. Nose is much riper than the average Cabernet Franc but the palate is very fine and fresh with no intimation that it's 15% alcohol. Subtle with balsam notes and a dry but not drying finish that lasts and lasts. Very satisfying. Unlike a standard bordeaux blend. It's clearly the produce of a warm place and vintage but there's nothing simple or sweet about this. Ultra-appetising and dangerously drinkable already. (JR)
