Da bere 0-0, Neal Martin, Sep 2024

The 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a very oaky nose, with dark chocolate scents smothering the red fruit. Strange. The palate feels stewed and oxidized. The bottle is faulty. Tasted blind at the Burgfest tasting.

From ancient vines planted in 1912 which nonetheless apparently set a generous yield of 40 hl/ha. Small berries, but plenty of them. 100% whole bunch ,100% new wood. Black centre with purple rim. Very dense with a little whole bunch pepper. Dark fruit, but absolutely gorgeous. Sumptuous but balanced, seemingly endless on the palate. The fruit is mostly dark but it is beautifully balanced. 12.8% finished and with least acidity. Perfectly integrated tannins, “like a mattress” says Nicolas. This is great wine.

Raised entirely in new oak with all its stems, the 2020 Chambertin Clos-de-Bèze Grand Cru has a tough job following the crystalline Les Amoureuses. Almost opaque at first, this whole bunch imparts a strong pepperiness, with a light charcoal scent in the background. The palate is medium-bodied with fine tannins, taut and fresh with a slightly chalky textured, sorbet-fresh finish. Afford this 5-8 years in bottle.
