The 2016 Corton Grand Cru shows a little reduction on the nose, although not to the same degree as others in this flight. The palate is medium-bodied with thick tannin, black cherry and cassis fruit with a blood orange note towards the sorbet-like finish. It just feels too sweet and does not urge you back for another sip. Tasted blind at the 2016 Burgfest tasting.

The 2016 Corton Grand Cru is showing well from bottle, unwinding in the glass to blow off a light touch of youthful reduction, revealing aromas of cassis, spices and rich soil tones. On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, deep and nicely concentrated, with juicy acids, powdery tannins and good length on the finish. The 2016 can't match the depth and amplitude of the 2015 rendition, but it's a very good effort.
A pungent nose reflects notes of menthol, wood toasty and a type of reduction the Burgundians call bourgeon de cassis. The succulent, indeed juicy medium-bodied flavors possess a lovely texture and fine mid-palate concentration before culminating a minerally yet suave finish that delivers sneaky good length. If this can add more depth with a decade of bottle age it could well merit the upper end of my predicted range. Barrel Sample: 91-93

This historic Domaine Bonneau du Martray is an iconic Burgundy address, dedicated to making two Grands Crus: its iconic white Corton-Charlemagne and red Corton, expressing the special terroir of the hill of Corton. Today it is owned by Stanley Kroenke, of Screaming Eagle fame.
