Impenetrable, almost black ruby. Very concentrated and with huge depth of black cherry and blackberry, but at the same time surprisingly contained. Savoury spice hints from oak and with a black-pepper prickle. Supple and with impressive depth on the palate but not overtly sweet or out of control in spite of the 16% (!) alcohol. Great balance but definitely a heady drink. I still expect this to age well although this is ready now. Velvety tannins. (WS)

One of the wines that changed the modern history of Italian wine, this expression from Braida is an evergreen favorite. The 2017 Barbera d'Asti Bricco dell'Uccellone is a dark and almost impenetrable expression with bold layers of thick, dark fruit. The wine is constructed like a little tower, layer upon layer, that rises tall with momentum and power. The intensity is beautiful, and that's always been the defining trait of Uccellone. It drinks beautifully now, but it will hold its own in the cellar.
A very ripe yet impressive style of Barbera with vanilla, blackberry crumble, eucalyptus, tar, mocha and coffee beans. Very structured and full-bodied on the palate, but beautiful acidity cuts right through the plush dark fruit. Long and serious on the finish. Superb as always. Drink from 2021.
