Punteggio 17/20 · Da bere 2010-2037, Richard Hemming MW, jancisrobinson.com, Mar 2021

65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 15% Sangiovese. Combines granite, cocoa and cherry giving an intense wall of flavour on the palate. There is beautiful delicacy to the tannin and acid, and a lengthy savoury finish. (RH)

The 2017 Grattamacco is a wine of breadth and power. Wild cherry, spice, sage, mint rose petal, cedar, licorice, sweet pipe tobacco and dried herbs all give the 2017 striking aromatic depth to play off its grand scale. The 2017 is rich and deep, and yet retains striking translucence and wonderful detail.

Congratulations to Grattamacco on the 35th anniversary of this iconic wine. The 2017 Bolgheri Superiore Grattamacco is an organic blend of 65% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot and 15% Sangiovese fermented in open-top oak vats with ambient yeasts and aged in oak for 18 months. The fruit represents a special selection from over 25 hectares of vines planted in a mix of soils with clay, sandstone, limestone marl and flysch. In fact, the territorial impact on the wine's bouquet is strong with dusty or salty notes that frame dark fruit, dried cherry and toasted spice. This wine shows polished elegance, and that's something that was not easy to achieve in this hot vintage. Production is 50,000 bottles.

Grattamacco

Grattamacco’s story begins when Piermario Meletti Cavallari purchased an abandoned vineyard in 1977 and grafted over many of the vines. He produced one of the earliest Super Tuscans in 1982 – a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Sangiovese and a wine which continues to earn acclaim today.
